The art department has a variety of classes with beginning level and prerequisite of Art Foundations. This course is designed to expose the student to as many different art materials as possible. Material such as pencils, ink, charcoal, pastels, watercolors, printmaking and claywill be used and art movements like realism, surrealism, and abstraction will be explored. Students will be required to keep a sketch book and have a pencil and an eraser. Other materials will be provided. This is sequential course and a student must have a passing grade to take 2nd semester. The course must be dropped if student fails 1st semester and can be retaken the next year starting with semester one.
After completing Art Foundations there are the following choices:
Multicultural Crafts: This course is a broad experience course which will expose the student to non-traditional art in many areas and different cultures. The main emphasis will be on beadwork, crochet, yarn painting, ceramics, calligraphy, plaster and metal tooling to name a few projects.
Drawing and Painting:
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art Foundations with a “B” or above
This course explores the different styles and materials used in drawing. Coursework includes landscape, architecture, still-life, portrait drawing from the use of watercolor, oil, and acrylic paint. Course work includes exploring traditional to modern artists and students creating their own works of art.
Sculptural Form:
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art Foundations with a “C” or above
This course is all about 3D. Some of the projects covered will be abstract form, sculptured form from life, mold making, plaster reductive, wire, and addative sculpture.
Advanced Art Studio :
Grade: Grade 12 & Instructors Approval, completion of Art Foundations and Drawing &Painting with a grade of “B” or above.
This course is the most advanced course in art and is designed for the serious art student. The creation of a strong art portfolio will be the focus for the semester. The course will be individually tailored to meet the needs of the artist to prepare a solid working art portfolio. Any unique or special equipment/materials for a student’s work will be at the student’s expense. Students must pass semester one to take 2nd semester.
