Handbook & Policies

Each school in the Mayville School District has a handbook that describes expectations, guidelines and routines for the school. Families are provided copies annually.

Each handbook is also available online:

Personal Communication Devices

Mayville School District has a no cell phone (Personal Communication Device – PCD) policy for all students in grades 4K–12 during the school day.

Daily Expectations

  • Before entering school, students must turn off their cellphones and store them in their lockers.

  • Devices may not be used or visible during class, passing time, or lunch.

Violations and Consequences

  • First Offense: Phone will be collected by administration. A parent or guardian must pick it up during business hours. The front office closes at 4:00 pm. Arrangements will not be made.

  • Repeated Offenses: Parent pickup and additional consequences, including detention or in-school suspension.

Our goal is to support responsible behavior, not to punish. However, repeated violations will be addressed appropriately.

Exceptions

Students with a documented medical need that requires a device may receive approval through the main office.

Reaching Your Child During the School Day

If you need to contact your child, please call the school office. Staff can deliver messages or have students report to the office. This is the most reliable and least disruptive method of communication.

In the Case of an Emergency

School staff are trained to respond to emergencies, including contacting 911 if needed. In a crisis, families will receive updates through official school communication tools such as ParentSquare.

Using a cell phone during an emergency can:

  • Distract students from staff instructions

  • Reveal locations due to light or sound

  • Spread false or incomplete information

  • Complicate emergency response and reunification procedures

Students will be permitted to access their phones when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, our focus will be on safety, calm, and communication through proper channels.

Why This Policy Matters

Reducing phone use during the school day helps:

  • Improve academic focus

  • Limit exposure to bullying and social media pressure

  • Support mental health and reduce screen-related anxiety

Research continues to show that excessive screen time can interfere with sleep, attention, and emotional well-being, especially during the school day. For a more detailed explanation, consult the following:

We appreciate your support as we work to build a respectful, focused, and safe learning environment. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the office.
