What is show choir?
Show choir is a competitive extra-curricular activity that involves singing and dancing. Each year, students learn a new 12 minute show of song and dance accompanied by a live band. The show theme changes from year to year and has different costumes and props to add to the entertainment of the show. Show Choir has a positive environment that helps build friendships, self-esteem, school pride, and performance skills.
What is Next Edition?
Next Edition is an extracurricular Jr. Show Choir that travels around WI to compete. This team currently consists of students entering 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th grade. Each year we work on performance skills including singing in an ensemble, solo singing, dancing, acting, and staging. This is a team that requires a lot of hard work, dedication, and personal practice.
What is the time commitment?
During the school year our competitive season runs from October through February meeting twice a week for rehearsal, attending three competitions, and three performances.
How do I sign up?
Students interested in show choir who are willing and able to commit to our competitive season, need to enroll in our summer camp. The summer school camp runs from 10AM -12PM Monday - Friday for the duration of summer school.
What is Summer Camp like?
At summer camp, students will begin to learn the show for the upcoming season. The main focus is learning vocals and choreography. We also work on team building, friendships, the overall atmosphere of what a show choir should be like, and have FUN! Please enjoy a video of our summer camp of 2024.
What is it like at a competition?
On a competition day, students would get ready after school and then ride a bus to the school where we are competing. We compete against 4-5 different middle school groups per competition. When we arrive at the school, students change into their costumes and we go to our warm up room. At warm up we stretch, sing, and review any important sections before we walk to the performance stage. Students perform their show for a large audience and a panel of judges. After the performance is over, students get to work one-on-one with one of the judges and receive a critique of the performance. Then the team will attend the awards ceremony and await the final results. Please enjoy a video of our competitive 2025 season!
What is the competitive show for 2026?
This year our show is 13! Inspired by the Netflix movie, 13 is a coming of age story about students in middle school learning to navigate growing up, friendships, crushes, and the day to day responsibilities of chores and homework. Songs include Thirteen, Opportunity, Bad Bad News, A Little More Homework, and Brand New You. See them perform at New London, Sauk Prairie, Fort Atkinson, and the Hartford Schauer Center this season.
What does the next level of performance look like?
Show choir prepares students for more opportunities at the high school level including Choir, Band, The Cardinal Singers (HS Show Choir), The Musical, and Incognito (Acapella Group).
What is the Jr Show Band?
Next Edition is very fortunate to be accompanied by a live high school band. Directed by JD Cooney, the jr show band travels and competes at competitions with us. Many other middle school show choirs are accompanied by a recording track. Mayville takes pride in the Jr Show Band!
