6th Grade Camp

Environmental Camp has been a highlight for the Mayville School District's 6th grade students for nearly 50 years.  6th graders go to Camp for the week and the 5th graders go to Camp for a day for a sneak peek of camp!

The Camp is held over five days and four nights in Plymouth, Wisconsin, at Camp Anokijig, just a brief car ride from Mayville.  6th grade students fill their days with classes that include Forestry, Water Study and Geology and other elements of their curriculum, which focuses on environmental study.  Students learn to make tie-dye T-shirts, ride horses, canoe and work on their tracking skills. There is recreational time at Camp, as well.  Students get a daily hour of recreation including boating, gaga ball, basketball, ping pong, and more...and they look forward to evenings filled with entertainment. That entertainment includes sing-alongs and smores by the campfire, reptile and animal meet-and-greets, and musical performances. Through it all, the students keep journals, writing about their experiences, their thoughts and their feelings.

It takes a village to create a Camp. The many students are supported by Elementary School teachers, volunteer chaperones, and an estimated 40 parents who either helped with the move-in, pitched in with the daytime chores or who stayed overnight.  Twenty high school counselors oversee and support the students all week long.

Beginning in 2024, a non-profit organization, Mayville Friends of Camp Inc (MFoC), was formed to take on the financial aspect of keeping Camp alive. Each year, the cost of sending a student to Environmental Camp varies, depending on the total number of students, rental fees, food and staffing. Each family is asked to raise $400 for their child's camp fees, however, no student is left out of camp. MFoC is currently seeking grants for outdoor education as well as hosting a few fundraisers. 5th & 6th Grade families are also encouraged to participate in the Scrip program, through the Mayville PTA, to fundraise money for Camp.
